University of Akron: M.S./Ph.D. Positions Available in Bone Biology
The Andronowski lab is looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals interested in pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Biology at the University of Akron. Applicants with research interests in bone adaptation and forensic anthropological applications of bone histology and 3D imaging are encouraged to apply.
Our lab investigates skeletal biology from microscopic (histomorphological) and 3D imaging perspectives and their application to human health, human anatomy, and forensic anthropology. In particular, we apply 2D and 3D imaging techniques to the study of microscopic features of human bone to further understandings of how bone remodeling is related to age-associated bone affecting conditions such as osteoporosis, and bone aging in general. We also specialize in forensic anthropological applications of bone histology and 3D imaging as tools in the process of human identification.
We use cutting-edge techniques and equipment for these and other avenues of research including high-resolution 3D imaging modalities such as desktop micro-CT and synchrotron radiation-based micro-CT (SR micro-CT) imaging. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to develop familiarity and expertise in the use of these techniques and will gain an integrative perspective of research in the fields of bone biology, human anatomy, and forensic anthropology. Initiative is highly encouraged and actively fostered in the lab – students will be aided in the development of exciting thesis projects that cater to their interests and expand their strengths.
Start dates can be anytime from January 2018 and onward. Interested applicants should email 1) a brief statement expressing your interest, and 2) curriculum vitae to Dr. Janna M. Andronowski (firstname.lastname@example.org). The Andronowski lab has funding available for exceptional M.S. and Ph.D. candidates. Students are also encouraged to explore and apply for external funding (there are numerous scholarship opportunities offered through UA and other agencies: see https://www.uakron.edu/gradsch/financial-assistance/).
